First Music Video Ever

Foo Fighters - Learn To Fly

I know my music videos seem to have a common theme of drug use (or implied drug use), but when I was a young lad, I saw this music video for the first time. Although I did not know why a fat lady was hallucinating that some guy’s head was a cheeseburger or why the pilot saw the steward flying outside the window, I could see that the members of Foo Fighters went to the cockpit and landed the plane safely at an airport, saving everyone on board. Though I could not grasp my cognitive processes at the time, I now realize the video had an impact on me. I realized that bravery in an individual is only measurable by their actions. Dave Grohl and the rest of the band acted while the rest of the plane panicked about the loss of control of the plane. Though they saved themselves, they inevitably saved all the people on the plane as well. To show that kind of attitude in an atmosphere of terror and panic reveals a high degree of bravery. After viewing this video, I had an attitude to put other people before myself. No matter the situation, I would be sure that other people were taken care of before I would take care of myself. Of course, there are times that I will treat myself to some simple pleasure, but in a social setting, I make sure that other people are fine before me. Because of this attitude, I will be prepared to take control of large aircraft while the crew is incapacitated from marijuana brewed coffee. Hopefully, a large “Learn to Fly” manual will be located underneath the seat.

I Love Dave Grohl!…and I LOVE the Foo Fighters! They are one of my favorite bands. This song is one of their many great songs under their belts. But it is not my favorite. “Everlong”, especially the acoustic version, is-I just love it, always have and always will. It is just one of those songs you do not ever get sick of no matter how many times you play it. Anyway, this song is a lot like most of the Foo Fighters’ other songs up beat with a good drum set or sweet guitars. But this video (and most other Foo Fighers’ music videos) are, we will call them, strange. Sometimes the guys in the band are wearing dresses. Other times Dave Grohl is in a blond pigtailed wig. At first, this freaked me out, and kind of ruined the song for me. But now I just find it hilarious, and random. Plus their amazing music makes up for whatever weird music video they may or may not have.

Sean, you are so full of crap! You turned the Foo Fighters into a parallel of the "heroes" in planes on September 11th! I'm glad that you've come to these fantastic conclusions for how you should conduct your life but this music is not full of bravery or utterly inspiring; it's just hilarious. I love the Foo Fighters and I remember being obsessed with this song, this video, and Dave Grohl. I never really made the connection of drug use with the random occurances in the video though...I suppose that was just my naivety. But I love that I can look back on this video now, being older and wiser, and still laugh--even if for different reasons than in the past.

I'm going to agree with Alex on this one Sean. Heroism doesn’t seem to be the main theme, the band saves everybody in the last minute of the video, just a fraction of the piece. I actually think the video is just warning you to say "No" to airline coffee, just go for the booze (it's never laced with weed). Still, good song, wicked awesome band, and a killer, sweet video. You're lucky that people in your house know the Foo Fighters are. Plus, loved the Tenacious D tied in there! I’m sure you caught it, I thought it was great!

I totally forgot about this music video. I never really watched music videos when I was younger, but somehow I did end up seeing this one. I watched it years ago, and I had completely forgotten about it. I remember seeing it and being quite amused with it. Obviously the diverse cast of characters totally portrayed by the band members makes for some comedy. Of course being so young when seeing it for the first time, I was just as delirious about what exactly the music video was about. But when you’re like ten or eleven, does it really matter as long as it can hold your attention span for four and a half minutes.
